Hi Friends!
If you’re an avid thrift store shopper like I am, you’ve probably had your share of weird discoveries. You never know what treasures you’re going to find, and that’s half the fun.

My latest discovery is definitely one of the most unusual things I’ve ever come across at a thrift store:
I saw these big pieces of live edge burl wood sitting on a lonely shelf in the corner of the store and at first, I thought they were those kitschy clocks shaped like a state they used to make in the 70’s. I was stunned to discover they were just plain pieces of lacquered wood.
I didn’t see any holes or hardware marks on the back and I’m not sure what they were originally intended to be, but they are the perfect size for end tables. One is about 18″x18″, the other is about 24″x24″. And, as it happens, I’ve been on the hunt for a cool pair of small end tables for my living room.
I had a not-very-exciting set that I bought at Marshall’s a long time ago and recently swapped them out for this vintage set I had in storage. The piecrust tables weren’t terrible, but they weren’t right for the room.
I had both tabletops covered with textured wallpaper that I painted antique gold, but they needed to be redone. I was dragging my feet on the project because I was hoping to find something that worked better.
I knew the slabs would look fabulous with hairpin legs, and I was positively giddy with excitement at my weird and thrifty find. It’s not that live edge slabs are strange all by themselves, but they are definitely an unusual discovery in a thrift store.
I ordered hairpin legs from Overstock.com (you can find them HERE), attached them with the hardware included and we were good to go:
I realize that these tables BARELY qualify as a DIY project… all I had to do was screw the legs on. But considering all the DIY projects I’ve tackled that went completely sideways, I’m going to take the easy win on this one.
I’m still kind of amazed I found these! They were at a thrift store outlet where housewares are sold by the pound, not the piece. I wasn’t exactly sure how much they were because I had a whole cart full of stuff (shocking, I know), but I weighed them when I got home and figure I paid about $9 for each one. Can you believe it? The hairpin legs were $40 for a set of 4. They aren’t cheap, but they are the perfect thing for this type of table.
Mine are 20″ tall, but they come in all different heights. If you want a more glammy look, Amazon has them in gold – you can find them HERE.
What do you think of my groovy $49 end tables?
